Goethe-Institut (incorporating the AGTV Victorian State Conference for Teachers of German)

The focus on climate change gives rise to serious debate about how we share the planet and strategies to promote peaceful coexistence and a sustainable future. Proficiency in more than one language is regarded worldwide as a basic requirement for the development of respectful and successful partnerships.

There has never been a better time to learn German. German remains a significant world language and the opportunities to interact personally with German-speakers worldwide either through technology, international exchanges or in local communities are real options for students now and in later life, especially as German innovation is present in all areas of human endeavour.

Students in our classrooms need to develop the skills and attitudes for independent learning. The language teacher skills students in building positive intercultural relationships with others and promotes foundational knowledge for learning languages. It is no longer ‘chalk and talk’ but rather the ‘guide by the side’. We scaffold learning and provide opportunities for all students to build confidence and to explore and express their ideas and information creatively in German with increasing success over time.

The national conference is an opportunity for reflection and sharing experiences and expertise in engaging students in productive learning opportunities for German across Australia and beyond.
